چکیده

In this paper we develop a mathematical model to capture BGP table fluctuations. This provides the necessary foundations to study shortand long-term routing table growth. We reason that this growth is operationally critical for network administrators who need to gauge the amount of memory to install in routers as well as being a potential deciding factor in determining when the Internet community will run out of IPv4 address space. We demonstrate that a simple model using a simple arrival process with heavy tailed service times is sufficient to reproduce BGP dynamics including the “spiky” characteristics of the original trace data. We derive our model using a classification technique that separates newly added or removed prefixes, short-term spikes and long-term stable prefixes. We develop a model of non-stable prefixes and show it has similar properties in their magnitude and duration to those observed in recorded BGP traces.

Adaptive Hypertext and Hypermedia Clients of the User Modeling System BGP - MS

This paper first describes the hypertext system KN-AHS which adapts to users’ presumed domain knowledge, and discusses the support that the user modeling shell system BGP-MS can provide for this adaptation. The aim of constructing KN-AHS was to demonstrate the feasibility of user modeling with BGP-MS in a “normal” hardware and software environment that is frequently found in the workplace. Basi...

Impact of IPv4 Address Allocation Practice on BGP Routing Table Growth

Rapid BGP routing table growth has been a main concern for the operation of the Internet in recent years. In this paper, we study how current IPv4 address allocation practice affects the BGP table growth. The practice includes both the newlymade allocations and two address policies, i.e., allocation size and minimum allocation size. We first found that the address blocks allocated during the pa...

BGP Routing Table: Trends and Challenges

BGP is currently the most important protocol for ensuring global connectivity over the Internet. This puts a great deal of responsibility on BGP and creates a number of challenges for it. Of primary concern is the impact that various currently deployed BGP-based techniques have on the scalability of the global routing table. While these techniques provide ISPs with additional traffic management...

Impact of Topology on BGP Convergence

For a few decades, the Boarder Gateway Protocol (BGP) realized Internet to be robust and acceptably stable despite its overwhelming growth. Although it is a fairly simple peer to peer protocol, yet because of the scale of Internet at which BGP is deployed, it is very difficult to understand behavior of BGP. It is considered a complex task to state what trends BGP may show if different internal ...

Explaining BGP Slow Table Transfers: Implementing a TCP Delay Analyzer

Although there have been a plethora of studies on TCP performance in supporting of various applications, relatively little is known about the interaction between TCP and BGP, which is a specific application running on top of TCP. This paper investigates BGP’s slow route propagation by analyzing packet traces collected from a large ISP and RouteViews Oregon collector. In particular we focus on t...
